Father Gavin Dunbar has been rector of St. John’s Church since 2006.  Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he studied classics at the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University, Halifax; before studying theology at Wycliffe College, Toronto. He was ordained priest of the Anglican Church of Canada in 1992 in the Diocese of Nova Scotia.  After serving several years in a rural parish in Nova Scotia he came to St. John’s in 1997, as a Priest Assistant.  He is President of the Prayer Book Society of the U. S. A.  In his spare time he enjoys the study of western art and architecture history (though books or travel) and listening to vocal music of the Renaissance and Baroque period.

Priest Associate

Father  O’ Brien was born and raised in Maritime Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He studied Classics, Theology, Philosophy and History, at the University of Kings College and Dalhousie University. Ordained to the Priesthood in 1999 for the Diocese of Saskatchewan at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI, he did formation in parishes in Oklahoma City, Vancouver, Oxford and Portsmouth, UK and read Divinity at Regent College, Vancouver and Oxford University, UK. He was previously Rector of parishes in Northern Saskatchewan and South East Florida, before coming to St. John’s, Savannah in 2007. He served as the Ecumenical Officer of The Diocese of Saskatchewan, a clergy delegate of The General Synod of The Anglican Church of Canada, a past board member of The Prayer Book Society USA, is a priest of The Society of the Holy Cross, a priest associate of the All Saints Sisters of the Poor, and a member of the permanent faculty of the Saint Michael’s Youth Conference. He enjosy tennis, hiking, travel, folk rock and Americana music, literature and cinema.

Secondary Ministries


Steven Branyon is a native of York, SC. and a graduate of North Greenville University, Winthrop University and Westminster Choir College.  Mr. Branyon has served churches and synagogues in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  Mr. Branyon has performed in Great Britain at Briston, Salisbury, Litchfield, Truro, and Wells Cathedrals.  He has professionally recorded with the choirs of St. Peter’s and Morristown, NJ.  At various times, Mr. Branyon teaches Music Appreciation for the Elderhostel classes for Mercer University at Jekyll Island.  He recently taught a course on Understanding the Organ for the local Senior Citizens Center in Savannah.


Minister with Youth

David Svihel began as Minister with Youth in December of 2017. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has spent time in Ohio, California, Indiana, and Kentucky before coming to Savannah, GA to serve at St. John’s. He is a graduate of Boyce College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is currently studying Reformation and Anglican theology at Trinity School for Ministry. Before coming to St. John’s, David spent time serving as a missionary in Poland, teaching Bible studies for students in California, and as Associate Youth Minister in Kentucky. He is married to his wonderful wife Kalista, who also has extensive ministry experience. They have a daughter named Lilly. In his spare time David enjoys hanging out with his family, reading, video games, going to concerts, coffee, and being outdoors.
